Frameworks, books and structures overview
Schools can purchase the assessment content that suits their school. Some schools use a single framework, for example: Primary Steps. Other schools use multiple frameworks.
For assessment purposes splitting students into 2 different groups provides more accurate progression reports:
- Students not yet engaged in subject specific learning. These are the more complex students, working at the lowest attainment levels. Assessment is focussed on cognition, emotions, physical movement and communication.
- Students engaged in subject specific learning. There are the more able students. Assessment is focussed on subjects like numeracy or literacy. Other non-academic areas exist, but have less of a focus. Most students are engaged in subject specific learning.
Connecting Steps supports both types of learners. You can choose the frameworks that suits your students and you can use multiple frameworks together.

Definitions
| What | Definition |
| Framework | An organized set of standards or learning outcomes that outlines what students should learn. The framework sets out clear, definable standards of what students should know and be able to do. The framework is set by the government and defines all the different learning levels students need to know and use. It is typically linked to a curriculum. |
| Active books | A Book is a collection of subjects, profiles, levels, strands and assessment points. which fit into a framework. Active Books shows all the books your school is currently using. |
| Current books | Shows all the books that are available in your country that are inline with current government guidance. A black plus sign next to a book means your school has access to it. A greyed out plus sign means your school hasn’t purchased it. |
| Old books | Shows books your school has bought that are not inline with current guidance or that have been replaced with newer versions. |
| Structures | Are linked to a framework and contain subjects, profiles and levels, but no content. Structures are predominantly used by schools that use Evisense without Connecting Steps (CS), or schools that use Evisense for a wider range of students than they are using CS with. |
| Extended structure | Is linked to a framework and contains: subjects, profiles, levels, strands and assessment points. |
