What is the B Squared Standardised Score?
Every B Squared framework has its own levels. These levels don’t all cover the same amount of development — some are quite big, others much smaller. That makes comparing progress across different frameworks tricky.
To solve this, each level has a B Squared Standardised Score behind it. This is a single scoring system that runs across all our frameworks. It lets you compare progress fairly, no matter which framework a pupil is working in.
Why does it matter?
- Fair progress – It takes account of the size of the level. Making progress through a big level is recognised properly, just like making progress through a smaller one.
- Consistency across frameworks – Progress can be compared even if they’re working in different frameworks (e.g. Primary Steps for academic progress, and SEMH or Autism Progress for those softer skills).
- Smooth transitions – When a pupil moves between frameworks, their progress is continuous. You don’t “lose” their previous progress.
Example
A pupil who has completed 25% of Steps 7 has made the same amount of progress as another pupil who has completed 50% of Year 3. The standardised score shows this clearly.
Schools can run any report in Analytics using the standardised score, you can be confident the progress is fair, consistent, and comparable across all pupils.
